Volkswagen is set to release a fresh Golf GTI variation this month. The Volkswagen Golf GTI is slated to receive a new special edition.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Variant for 50th Anniversary

According to Motor1.com, CEO Thomas Schäfer revealed the date of the car's debut-May 31 during the Nurburgring 24 Hours event, which falls on the same year as the Golf's 50th anniversary in 2024-in a short teaser video that he posted on LinkedIn.

The video features the hot hatch navigating the famous track, with Volkswagen blurring out specific details. Initial observations suggest the new variant showcases a more athletic front bumper design with extended accents resembling inverted fangs that sweep towards the outer fenders.

Motor1.com suggests that given VW's commemoration of 50 years of the Golf, it is probable that the upcoming GTI variant could be named the Clubsport 50 or Edition 50 model. Volkswagen has been introducing anniversary models every five years starting from the Mk3 20 Years Edition.

Moreover, the report states the enhancements anticipated for the upcoming special edition model may draw inspiration from the Clubsport 45 released in 2021. The Clubsport 45 featured a lighter build compared to the standard GTI, was equipped with an Akrapovič titanium sports exhaust, and boasted increased power output surpassing the regular version at 292 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

CarExpert.au.com notes that while Volkswagen intentionally obscured the Golf GTI in the video, noticeable changes to its front bumper include two fang-like elements flanking the radiator inlet, distinct from those on the upcoming 'Mk8.5' facelifted model.

The allusions to the Golf's 50th anniversary, which took place on March 29, suggest that this special edition likely commemorates the model's fifty years in production. Volkswagen has a history of marking specific Golf production milestones.

The Mk3 Golf 20th Anniversary GTI released in 1996 marked twenty years of Golf GTI production specifically, followed by the GTI 25th Anniversary Edition (2001, Mk4), GTI Edition 30 (2006, Mk5), GTI Edition 35 (2011, Mk6), and Golf GTI Clubsport 45 (2021, Mk7.5). Although the Clubsport 45 was not available for purchase in Australia, Australian customers enjoyed the sole anniversary edition produced for the Golf GTI's 40th year.

Volkswagen's top-tier front-wheel-drive hatch, known abroad as the Golf GTI Clubsport, was specially marketed in Australia as the 40 Years model to avoid a trademark dispute with Holden Special Vehicles (HSV), which utilized the Clubsport name for one of its enhanced Commodores.

CarBuzz mentions that despite the pixelation, subtle design variances are discernible. The new front air vents are highlighted by a larger front bumper with noticeable body-colored embellishments on the forthcoming model. This model will be based on the newly upgraded eighth generation Golf GTI, which has improvements such as an improved IQ. Among other things, it has LED headlights and taillights and does not have a manual transmission.

VW has commemorated important GTI milestones with a number of 'Edition' models, such the GTI Clubsport 45, which was debuted in early 2021. With 19-inch wheels, a sports exhaust, and improved aerodynamics, this special edition distinguished itself apart from the standard GTI.

CarBuzz also indicates that with the transition of the Golf GTI to electric power, the anticipated Edition 50 - a name nearly confirmed - is likely aiming for a grand finale. Considering Volkswagen's announcement of an unveiling at the Nürburgring, speculation arises about the potential for the Germans to set a new front-wheel-drive lap record.
