On Tuesday, BYD from China introduced its newest iteration of plug-in hybrid technology, setting a remarkable benchmark for reduced fuel consumption. The Chairman of BYD, Wang Chuanfu, revealed this cutting-edge technology during an event held in Xian, the provincial capital of Shaanxi.
Lower Fuel Consumption, BYD Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle
When equipped with a fully charged battery and a complete gasoline tank, the BYD plug-in hybrid car can cover a distance exceeding 2,000 kilometers. It achieves an unprecedented fuel efficiency of 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers equivalent to 62.1 miles when operating solely on drained batteries.
According to Reuters, BYD's previous iteration of plug-in hybrid technology, offering an electric range of several kilometers and consuming 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers when using the gasoline engine alone, has significantly contributed to its swift expansion since 2021.
Models like the Qin Plus DM-i sedan and Song Plug DM-i SUV have been instrumental in this growth. Priced from 79,800 yuan or $11,011, plug-in hybrids have constituted the majority of BYD's sales over the last three years, totaling 3.6 million units sold by the company.
According to Business Insider, BYD claims that its latest hybrid powertrain enables vehicles to travel 1,250 miles without the need for refueling or recharging. This range is nearly double that of certain competing hybrids in the United States.

The idea of driving such a distance without any stops for refueling remains an ambitious concept for current market offerings, regardless of whether they run on gasoline or electricity.
Business Insider discusses the impact of the newest BYD plug-in hybrid vehicle. This significant advancement in hybrid technology could further fuel the existing enthusiasm for these vehicles due to their remarkable fuel efficiency, reduced initial expenses, and alleviated concerns about driving range limitations.
These models serve as a popular choice among manufacturers and buyers alike, serving as a transitional option between conventional internal combustion engines and fully electric models, particularly as sales of electric vehicles plateau in various markets.
BYD: Challenger in the Market
Autoblog emphasizes BYD's competitive position in the market. During the first quarter, the Chinese firm reduced prices of its plug-in hybrids by 10-22%, leading to strong sales of models like Qin and Song over traditional gasoline vehicles such as Lavida and Sagitar in the mainstream segment. The appeal lies in their affordability and superior fuel efficiency, which resonates with price-conscious Chinese consumers.
On a global scale, BYD, while intensifying its global outreach, continues to lag behind major multinational automakers like Toyota, Volkswagen, General Motors, and Stellantis in terms of sales volume.
Alongside other Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, BYD is presenting a growing challenge to Japanese automakers in foreign markets such as Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, where governmental trade barriers and tariffs are relatively lower.
As reported by NGT News, the Chinese company BYD has introduced its inaugural pickup truck, the BYD Shark plug-in hybrid, in Mexico. Designed for global markets, this model represents BYD's initial international product debut beyond China.
Described as a luxury pickup with a focus on new energy intelligence, the Shark showcases the DMO Super Hybrid off-road platform, serving as the newest inclusion in BYD's range of products.
