In recent news, there has been a significant shift in the world of hypercars. The title of the fastest hypercar, once held by the Rimac Nevera, has now been claimed by Japan's Aspark with its latest creation, the SP600.
Aspark SP600 Beats Rimac Nevera
On June 8, the SP600 achieved an impressive speed of 438.7 km/h according to the onboard Racelogic V-Box, equivalent to 272.6 mph. This new record surpasses the Nevera's previous achievement by 16.6 mph. This Japanese model's manufacturing is attributed to Manifattura Automobili Torino.
The Croatian hypercar is no longer the fastest electric vehicle in the world, according to a new Robb article. Surpassing its top speed by close to 15 mph, the Aspark SP600 has now claimed the new record. It's worth noting that the current record holder is not a production model, underscoring the remarkable nature of this achievement.
The milestone was achieved by Marc Bessing behind the wheel of the SP600 on Saturday, June 8, at the Automotive Testing Papenburg track in Germany, the very same location where the Rimac Nevera had previously set its record back in the fall of 2022.
The Aspark SP600, a new model distinct from the Owl, shares some design similarities with Aspark's first EV. This "production intent" prototype resulted from a partnership between Aspark and Manifattura Automobile Torino (M.A.T.), the Italian company behind the Owl's production.
While specific details remain limited, Aspark mentioned that the car, featuring no side mirrors, underwent rigorous virtual and physical testing, including wind tunnel trials, to enhance its aerodynamic efficiency. Additionally, Bridgestone developed custom Potenza Race tires specifically for the SP600 to support its groundbreaking performance during the record-setting attempt.
Additional insights into this recent record-breaking achievement were provided by Motor1.com. The Aspark SP600, crafted in Italy under the expertise of Manifattura Automobili Torino, underwent rigorous testing at the ATP proving ground in Papenburg, Germany.

This renowned test track, where the Nevera had previously set speed records in 2022, along with 23 other records the following year, features two lengthy 2.4-mile straights conducive to testing a hypercar's performance capabilities.
Prior to the historic run, the Aspark SP600 had already demonstrated impressive speeds of 261.4 mph and 267.1 mph, surpassing the Nevera's previous achievements. Behind the wheel of this new electric speed champion was Marc Basseng, a distinguished 45-year-old German racing driver known for setting a Nürburgring lap record in 2010 with a Pagani Zonda R, clocking in at 6 minutes and 47 seconds.
While subsequent cars have since surpassed this record, the current titleholder is the AMG One with a remarkable 6:35 lap time.
More About Aspark SP600
As reported by CarScoops, the Aspark SP600 is referred to as a "production-intent prototype" at this stage. While not officially unveiled yet, it bears resemblances to the Aspark Owl but with fine-tuned aerodynamics aimed at achieving higher speeds.
It remains uncertain whether any enhancements were made to the quad-motor electric powertrain generating 1,984 hp (1,480 kW / 2,012 PS) as seen in the Owl model. Details regarding expected production volumes and pricing for the Aspark SP600 are currently undisclosed.
In a strategic partnership, Aspark worked alongside Bridgestone to develop a tailor-made tire based on the Potenza Race series specifically for the record-breaking endeavor.
This specialized tire is designed to withstand speeds exceeding 420 km/h (261 mph) while meeting the unique requirements of Aspark's vehicle weight and driving dynamics.
