Car manufacturers continuously innovate and even collaborate to keep up with and win the growing competition in both the electric and traditional car arenas. Sony and Honda will share a common EV platform to develop electric cars. The collaboration aims to reduce the cost of manufacturing electric vehicles.

Why Sony and Honda Share a Common EV Platform

Chinese cars' presence in the market is setting challenges for car manufacturers. The technology and aesthetics they offer plus their more affordable price, are enticing to prospective car buyers. Sony and Honda expanded their partnership. They share a common EV platform to reduce production costs, thus aiming to make their electric cars more attractive to buyers.

As reported by Nikkei Asia, the shared platform is set to feature in Honda's 0 Series electric vehicles, along with EV models under the Afeela brand, managed by the collaborative effort of Sony Honda Mobility. These electric vehicles are scheduled for their launch in North America in 2026. In a bid to adapt to the increasing cost-effectiveness of Chinese electric vehicle producers, Honda and Sony are focusing on reducing expenses and accelerating development timelines.

The report also explained that Afeela is positioned as a premium electric vehicle (EV) brand, setting it apart in the competitive EV market landscape. Unlike the convention of using distinct platforms for high-end and low-end EVs, Afeela EVs will share the same platform as the entry-level 0 Series EV, emphasizing a unified approach to performance.

The Afeela brand aims to create a unique selling point through its focus on enhancing the in-vehicle experience, such as incorporating a remote play system that links the EV to the owner's PlayStation console at home. This strategy mirrors the trend seen among major competitors globally, with Volkswagen opting for a common platform for both its Volkswagen and Porsche EVs, while Toyota Motor is gearing up to introduce Lexus EVs with shared platforms by 2026.

How Much Would Electric Vehicles Cost from This Shared Common EV Platform

According to reports from CarScoops, Honda's upcoming 0 Series electric vehicles are anticipated to enter the U.S. market with a starting price of approximately $40,000. Thus positioning them within a fiercely competitive market segment. However, the pricing details for vehicles from the collaborative venture between Sony and Honda under the Afeela brand remain undisclosed.

Honda's future lineup of electric vehicles is set to include seven distinct models for release by 2031. With an investment of 10 trillion yen (equivalent to around $65 billion), Honda is gearing up to equip these vehicles with features such as an "ultra-thin battery pack" and a compact e-axle system developed in-house.

Sony Honda Mobility, Afeela Electric Cars

Afeela electric cars will soon be out on the market. The Sony and Honda Mobility, a partnership between these two giant companies, is set to sell Afeela electric vehicles by 2026.

Almost two years before it becomes available for buyers, the companies are giving everyone a glimpse of its excellent and unique features.

As reported by VentureBeat, located on the vehicle's hood just above the bumper, is a distinctive feature known as the "media bar," where personalized messages can be displayed. When approached, the media bar can greet individuals by name, as seen with a friendly message like "Welcome Dean Takahashi :)."

Users have the flexibility to customize the media bar to showcase a variety of messages according to their preferences, from celebratory phrases like "Happy Birthday" to fun graphics such as the Spider-Man logo that illuminates in lights when displayed. The report also highlighted other exciting features of the Afeela electric car. Upon arrival at Sony's PlayStation headquarters, Afeela welcomes visitors, setting the tone for a personalized experience.

This innovative vehicle boasts cutting-edge safety technologies, including an AI system for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a unique feature called "Mobility as a Creative Entertainment Space," aligning with the overarching concept of redefining the interaction between individuals and mobility.
