Before its exit from the United States in 2021, the Mazda 6 captured attention as a well-kept industry secret. Recognized for its sophisticated performance, stylish aesthetics, and unique diesel and manual options, it left a notable mark. Now, indications point to a potential comeback, possibly as the much-anticipated Mazda 6 EV alongside a rear-wheel-drive, internal combustion engine model.

Mazda 6: Electric Car Version

According to The UBJ's, Mazda's intellectual property documentation unveils an intriguing prospect: the resurgence of the Mazda 6, envisioned this time as an electric vehicle. This potential transition may align with the debut of a rear-wheel-drive variant featuring an internal combustion engine. While trademark filings don't always guarantee product launches, the surrounding indirect evidence strongly indicates the plausibility of the Mazda 6 EV, potentially labeled as the Mazda 6e.

Nevertheless, despite the conjecture, there have been no official announcements regarding an electric version of the sedan. While fans anticipate the potential return of the Mazda 6 in any iteration, we approach this with prudence, considering the less-than-ideal reception of Mazda's MX-30 launch.

According to The Drive, Mazda hinted at the electric sedan through its trademark applications with the European Union Intellectual Property Office for the terms Mazda 6e and 6e. These filings explicitly relate to "automobiles and their components; electric cars and their components," leaving little doubt about the potential purpose.

Although there's no corresponding filing with the USPTO, Mazda has submitted remarkably detailed patents outlining the design of an electric sedan. Mazda's patent for an electric sedan.

Reportedly, Mazda is anticipated to introduce its second foray into electric vehicles in North America by approximately 2025, leveraging existing platforms. This timeframe closely corresponds with the purported return of the Mazda 6 on a rear-wheel-drive platform shared with its SUV lineup.

The Drive also cited Best Car Web claims that, in contrast to reports to the contrary, the rear-wheel-drive 6 was only briefly put on hold while its development was ongoing. It is anticipated that in 2025, the Mazda 6 with rear-wheel drive will still be offered in the US.

About 2021 Mazda 6

Superior handling, a calm interior, and an aura of refinement distinguish the Mazda 6 from its rivals. As per Car and Driver, the lack of charm of the turbo engine, the lack of an environmentally friendly model, and the fact that premium equipment are only available on the priciest trim levels are some disadvantages, though. In conclusion, the Mazda 6 stands out as a superb family sedan, combining beauty, refinement, and an enjoyable driving experience.

The 2021 Mazda 6 received updates including the introduction of the Carbon Edition with unique exterior and interior features, such as Polymetal Gray paint, black accents, and red leather upholstery. Additionally, all trims now offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with higher trims featuring wireless CarPlay. The turbocharged engine has been retuned for increased torque, but optimal performance requires 93-octane fuel.

The Mazda 6 does not include a hybrid option, setting it apart from many other mid-size alternatives. However, it does offer a choice between two responsive 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines. The standard engine delivers 187 horsepower, while the optional turbocharged engine produces up to 250 horsepower.
