Quad-Motor EQG is Now Mercedes-Benz G 580

Mercedes is set to unveil the highly-anticipated Mercedes-Benz G 580 electric Quad-Motor EQG at the prestigious Beijing motor show, marking a significant milestone in the realm of electric vehicles. Formerly recognized as the EQG, this innovative electric 4x4 is poised to hit the market under the name G580 with EQ Technology later this year, following its grand debut on April 24 at Auto China.

The G580 will be the star of an array of fascinating Mercedes demonstrations during the event, as noted in Autocar's report. The completely redesigned EQS saloon and the new plug-in hybrid AMG GT coupé will also have their premieres at the display.

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 electric formerly Quad-Motor EQG created a big impression when it made its concept debut at the 2021 Munich Motor Show because to its innovative quad-motor drivetrain. This technology keeps the off-road capabilities that are associated with the G-Class. It is also providing unmatched maneuverability, similar to the agility displayed by BYD's Yangwang U8 4x4 model.

The American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian adopted the same four-motor configuration for its R1 truck and SUV versions. With its carefully considered design, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 offers an unparalleled blend of off-road capability and cutting-edge on-road efficiency.

Positioned to serve as a technological flagship for Mercedes-Benz's freshly established G sub-brand, the electric G-Glass is poised to embody a fusion of luxury and off-road prowess in the realm of electric vehicles, as outlined by G brand chief Emmerich Schiller.

Emphasizing an unmatched blend of opulence and all-terrain performance, Schiller expressed the brand's commitment to ensuring that the electric G-Class matches, if not exceeds, the capabilities of its internal-combustion-engine counterpart both on-road and off-road, without compromising on its remarkable capabilities.

More Features, Specifications

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 electric Quad-Motor EQG will not feature a front luggage compartment, commonly known as a 'frunk'. Instead, the charging cable will have a designated storage space in a secure and lockable box, mirroring the concept's innovative approach. This storage solution will be integrated into the area typically reserved for the spare tire on the sideways-opening tailgate, showcasing a practical and space-efficient design ethos for the electric off-roader.

Introducing a cutting-edge electric drivetrain configuration, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 electric Quad-Motor EQG boasts a revolutionary setup comprising four electric motors, with each motor dedicated to powering one specific wheel. Distinguishing itself from the existing EQ models in Mercedes-Benz's portfolio, this innovative drivetrain configuration draws parallels to the renowned SLS E-Cell engineered by Mercedes-Benz's high-performance division, AMG.

This distinctive setup promises enhanced performance, agility, and precision in varying driving conditions, marking a significant leap forward in electric vehicle technology for the iconic G-Class model.

It uses the same four-motor setup that the American electric car company Rivian used for its R1 truck and SUV models. The Mercedes-Benz G 580 has been thoughtfully designed to provide an unmatched combination of off-road prowess and advanced on-road efficiency.

According to Schiller as shared in Autocar, this configuration attempts to establish the EQG as a leader in the electric vehicle market by delivering a smooth blend of tough off-road capability and improved on-road characteristics, thereby creating new standards for adaptability and driving pleasure in the premium off-roading market.

Electric G-Class Tested

As reported by CarBuzz, the upcoming electric truck, anticipated to be named the EQG, is set to impress with its exceptional grip and off-roading prowess, thanks to the incorporation of four independent e-motors. Expected to make its debut within this year, the EQG will showcase a blend of design, interior features, and technological advancements inspired by the renowned G-Class and G63 models.

The future battery-powered Mercedes-Benz G-Class is seen in a recent video with CEO Ola Kallenius proving its resilience to harsh weather by testing it in Sweden's difficult Arctic Circle. With four electric motors-one for each wheel-the electric G-Class has great handling and grip, allowing it to easily maneuver over a variety of surfaces, including gravel, ice, and snow.
