The introduction of Dodge's electric vehicle has arrived with the unveiling of the Dodge Charger Daytona. This marks a significant entry for Dodge into the realm of electric vehicles. While the Charger name naturally aligns with the characteristics of an electric car, it also carries a rich legacy, prompting Dodge to chart a distinct course for its inaugural EV endeavor.

Dodge Charger Daytona Debut

As reported by Moto1.com, the strategic move entails the replacement of the Charger and Challenger models with an electric vehicle bearing the iconic Charger Daytona moniker. The concept vehicle for this avant-garde EV attracted attention for its eye-catching design when it was displayed at the 2023 SEMA exhibition. Nevertheless, devoted Mopar fans expressed dismay over the lack of internal combustion engine (ICE) options.

At last, the 2024 Charger Daytona from Dodge has made its debut, dispelling any lingering doubts about the availability of a gas engine variant. This release signifies not only an exceptional performance EV but also a return to the realm of classic high-octane muscle cars.

The initial decision by Dodge to step away from the internal combustion engine (ICE) muscle car segment seemed perplexing, and in a surprising turn of events, it appears to have been a calculated marketing maneuver akin to the "New Coke" strategy, aimed at generating heightened interest and demand.

Classic Design: Touch from the Past

According to an Architectural Digest article, the Charger Daytona's design, includes a streamlined fastback roofline, a solid side panel and an extended hood. Additionally, it has a smoothly sculpted front end, and a powerful rear section. All contributes to a classic muscle vehicle. These unique characteristics honor the current gasoline-powered Challenger, a contemporary reimagining of the Dodge Challenger that debuted in the early 1970s.

However, beneath its nostalgic aesthetic, the Charger Daytona conceals compelling advancements made possible by its electric powertrain. Notably, the vehicle's wheels have been strategically positioned at the corners, contributing to enhanced stability and maneuverability, while an expanded passenger area ensures ample interior space, particularly for rear-seat occupants.

The inclusion of a fully integrated glass roof serves to illuminate the interior, transforming what was once a rather dim cabin into a luminous environment. Furthermore, the standard all-wheel drive system offers heightened traction in diverse driving conditions, although the onboard technology still enables enthusiasts to engage in spirited driving maneuvers such as controlled slides, donuts, drifting, and exhilarating rear-wheel burnouts.

The traditional distinction between classic Chargers as two-door coupes and the four-door sedan iteration introduced by Dodge in 2005 is finally bridged through this redesign. As per Digital Trends, the new Charger enters the scene as a coupe, inheriting the position previously held by the Challenger in the lineup, while also offering a sedan variant slated for release in 2025.

Both electric and gasoline powertrains will be available for both body styles, ensuring a diverse range of options for consumers. Remarkably, the coupe configuration also provides a generous 37.3 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded. Notably, the Charger Daytona marks the debut of the STLA Large platform, one of the four EV platforms unveiled by Dodge parent company Stellantis in 2021. This innovative platform accommodates a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain, engineered to deliver varied power outputs.
