More than ten years have passed since the P1's release, according to CarScoops. McLaren has been working hard on the replacement. The forthcoming vehicle, internally referred to as the P18, is expected to replace the current flagship in the Ultimate Series portfolio. It will have an advanced carbon fiber chassis with integrated seat backs.
The engine projected to power the powertrain is a V8 engine. It is possibly twin-turbocharged. It will be combined with an upcoming hybrid system that is expected to weigh roughly 70% less than the current model. The mystery is further enhanced by the fact that the car will defy convention. It will employ standard gullwing doors rather than dihedral doors-a first for McLaren. With over 1,000 horsepower predicted, the P18 will be a significant addition to the McLaren lineup.
According to discussions with Auto News, dealers who received a sneak peek of the car have noted its headlights reminiscent of the Artura and 750S models, along with the presence of a retractable rear spoiler. Additionally, the vehicle is set to feature 3D-printed suspension components and incorporate "F1-style aero design elements."
Contrary to widespread anticipation of McLaren's next hypercar being a battery-electric vehicle, product strategy director Jamie Corstorphine has indicated that the current technology for a BEV does not yet meet the performance standards demanded for both road and track capabilities.

McLaren's Power
As per Autoblog, Citing anonymous inside sources, the industry trade journal Automotive News Europe characterized the P18 as "Formula One-inspired." The plug-in system is set to generate over 1,000 horsepower with the assistance of a new V8 engine, although details regarding the drivetrain's layout, including the number of motors, remain undisclosed. These sources also disclosed that the powertrain will weigh approximately 70% less than the current system utilized by McLaren. This emphasis on weight is a key factor in the decision not to pursue a fully electric model.
In the same report by Automotive News Europe, product strategy director Jamie Corstorphine elaborated on the brand's approach to electric elements in a hybrid powertrain, stating, "Customers certainly appreciate the electric elements of a hybrid powertrain, but an electric McLaren must also be lightweight and deliver on the brand's signature driving performance - on the road and on the track. And, the technology is not there yet. It's not simply about straight-line performance. It has to be able to deliver 10 laps of sustained performance."
McLaren has not provided a statement on the report, nor has it publicly disclosed the debut date for the successor to the P1. If the speculation holds true, the British automaker will re-enter the hypercar segment ahead of its primary competitors. In the 2010s, the P1 competed with the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari. Porsche is expected to make a decision regarding the production of the electric Mission X concept in the upcoming months.
Meanwhile, Ferrari has not revealed any details about the timing of a potential successor to the LaFerrari, although it is anticipated. Spy shots captured in Italy in 2023 may have offered an early glimpse of the model, albeit showing a heavily disguised early prototype.
