The main designer of Rivian revealed where the company got inspiration for the Rivian R3 in a recent interview. The design team has created a shape that is receiving a lot of praise by drawing inspiration from the classic appeal of European hot hatches and coupes from the 1980s.
Rivian R3 Retro Facelift
The unveiling of the R3 crossover surprised many with its distinctively sloped tail end, setting it apart from its R1T, R1S, and upcoming R2 counterparts. Delving into discussions with Rivian's chief design officer Jeff Hammoud, The Drive uncovered the intriguing influence of Group B legends on this innovative design.
According to The Drive, the chief design officer at Rivian expressed the initial motivation behind the R3's development. He underlined the company's goal to design a car that honors driving pleasure, maintains off-road capability, and is loyal to the Rivian brand. The spirit of rally cars, especially classic models like the Audi Quattro and Lancia Delta Integrale, served as inspiration for this concept.
The goal was to infuse the Rivian brand with its distinctive character while evoking the emotive experience associated with these legendary vehicles.
The newly unveiled R3 crossover presents itself as a standout in the hot hatch segment, exuding undeniable appeal. With an anticipated price point rumored to be below $45,000 (Rivian has indicated that the R2 will start at $45,000), it offers a more accessible entry into the Rivian lineup compared to the $70,000-plus R1T and R1S.
Although all aficionados are catered to by Rivian's larger vehicles, the R2 and R3 are different in that they do not have the air suspension technology featured in the truck and large SUV. CEO RJ Scaringe has made inroads over the upcoming introduction of a new line of accessories designed specifically for these new models, such as bike racks and rooftop tents, which will increase their adaptability and appeal to drivers who are looking for adventure.

Rivian's Latest Upgrade
Abimelec Design, as reported by CarScoops, has offered a creative interpretation of the potential aesthetic transformations and livery concepts for the upcoming R3X model. Inspired by the legendary Lancia Delta Integrale, Renault R5 Turbo, and VW Golf GTI from the 80s, the rendered designs showcase subtle yet impactful styling changes.
Among the various renditions, the Lancia-inspired model stands out as particularly striking. Presented in a vibrant red hue, it showcases a distinctive pinstripe adorned with the iconic Martini colors, running just below the side windows. Additionally, this version features white wheels and a modified front bumper with updated turn signals, contributing to its visual appeal and individuality within the Retro 80s icons theme.
But fans will have to wait a while, as manufacturing of the R3 and R3X is anticipated to start following the release of the R2 in 2026, barring any unanticipated delays in Rivian's production schedule. The Drive also disclosed that the R2 and R3 will offer two different battery sizes.
While Rivian has not disclosed specific information about the smaller battery pack, it has stated that the larger pack provides over 300 miles of range on a full charge and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds.
This advancement could potentially herald a new era for electric rally cars, and given Rivian's track record of delivering high-quality interiors and rapid technological advancements, it's almost certain that the R3 will introduce its own distinct enhancements compared to its predecessors.
