In a strategic shift, Volkswagen has opted to go forward independently with its affordable EV project following the conclusion of discussions with Renault. The decision to terminate negotiations with Renault is specifically regarding the collaborative development of an affordable electric iteration of the Twingo. Sources indicated that Renault is gearing up to introduce a cost-effective electric vehicle. The breakdown of discussions suggests that Volkswagen might now have to forge ahead independently in crafting its own budget-friendly EV model.
Meanwhile, Renault is still dedicated to developing the electric Twingo, which is scheduled for introduction in 2026, and is working to advance environmentally friendly mobility alternatives.
According to a story by Electrek, Renault is reportedly making headway on the Twingo EV, which is scheduled to make its debut in 2026. A Volkswagen official, meanwhile, stated that the business is actively looking into ways to produce more reasonably priced EVs, but she did not address the joint venture.
Moreover, Electrek reported that VWis withdrawing from the collaboration as stated by insiders. A recent Reuters article asserts that Volkswagen has terminated negotiations with Renault to manufacture an affordable electric model of the Twingo.

One insider noted the struggle to secure an agreement, while another indicated that Volkswagen and Renault were nearing a partnership before Volkswagen opted to pursue the development of its independent affordable electric vehicle.

A source mentioned that Renault plans to proceed with the electric Twingo independently from VW but remains open to potential partnerships. Sources within Volkswagen anticipate a forthcoming decision regarding their EV initiative in the coming weeks. Concurrently, VW brand CEO Thomas Shafer affirmed his intentions to introduce an affordable electric vehicle by 2027.
Last March, Volkswagen introduced its affordable electric vehicle, the ID 2all. Described by VW as "Roomy as a Golf" and "Economical as a Polo," this electric car aims to combine space and affordability in its design.
As reported by Autoblog, Ampere, Renault's division handling the Twingo program, opted not to provide any comments. Similarly, a Volkswagen spokesperson chose not to elaborate on the discussions between the two companies but mentioned that the German automaker was evaluating its strategies concerning affordable EVs.
The insider revealed that Renault intends to carry on with the Twingo project independently from Volkswagen but remains receptive to potential collaborations, including those within the Nissan and Mitsubishi alliance.
This development poses a setback for Renault CEO Luca de Meo's vision for enhanced cooperation among European automakers to counter Chinese rivals, drawing parallels to Airbus's multi-country structure and ownership.
The proposed partnership betwen VW and Renault for the Twingo had the potential to serve as the foundational framework for an automotive equivalent of Airbus, according to the second source.
European car manufacturers are setting their sights on producing compact EVs priced below 20,000 euros ($21,686) to better position themselves against competitive Chinese brands such as BYD in the market.
