The latest iteration of MINI's Cooper, the new John Cooper Works (JCW) model, unveiled in September, is scheduled to premiere at this year's 24 Hours of Nürburgring. This autumn will mark the introduction of the new MINI John Cooper Works, offering a unique selection between petrol and all-electric propulsion for the first time.
MINI John Cooper Works Comes with Petrol Power
On June 1, a camouflaged version of the future petrol-powered MINI JCW will compete in the endurance contest the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. According to AutoExpress, Paddy Hopkirk's winning 1964 Monte Carlo Rally car is referenced in the red and white camouflage of the John Cooper Works variant, a nod to classic Mini rally cars. The '37' numbering is a nod to that historic vehicle.
The latest version showcases flared wheel arches, a twin roof spoiler, and an enhanced rear with a central large exhaust pipe. Retaining customizable tail-light panels from the new MINI Cooper, the petrol MINI JCW is expected to utilize the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine seen in the MINI Cooper S, potentially delivering around 250bhp given the power increase from 176bhp in the previous generation to 201bhp in the new Cooper S.
This bump in power may bring the new JCW model close to the 228bhp output of its predecessor. Meanwhile, according to Autocar, the unique design elements include a more prominent front grille with new air intakes, a substantial rear diffuser (expected to be refined for the production model), and an elevated roof spoiler.
Additionally, alongside the performance variant of the next-gen electric Mini Cooper, there will be a revamped British-made petrol model that is essentially an upgraded version of the former John Cooper Works. While maintaining its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, enhancements are likely to elevate the power output from the previous 231bhp to stay competitive with models like the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
The release schedule for the petrol Johnny Cooper Works is set for later this year, while the electric variant is expected to hit dealerships in 2025. Speculations suggest that the electric model will feature a single motor with more power than the Cooper SE's 215bhp and 243lb ft.

More About JCW
Per Newsbytes, the commencement of electric JCW production in the UK is anticipated in a couple of years. MINI's approach to crafting this fresh variant focuses on striking a harmonious blend of weight and maneuverability, achieved through a sole electric motor propelling the front wheels. To support increased performance, there are intentions to outfit this model with an expanded 54.2kWh battery pack.
The estimated initial cost is anticipated to hover around $40,000, contingent upon the chosen powertrain option. The petrol-driven JCW is set to join the competition at this year's 24 Hours of Nürburgring, commencing on June 1. It will engage in the SP 3T class alongside the independent racing outfit Bulldog Racing.
The camouflaged JCW will honor vintage MINI racing vehicles from the 1960s through its red-and-white color palette and emblem bearing the number "37." These variants are anticipated to be accessible in the US market alongside the petrol JCW model.
