Ford is poised to unveil a cutting-edge electric coupe at its Cologne facility, hinting at a potential revival of the iconic Capri brand. This forthcoming electric coupe SUV, labeled a "sports crossover," is a product of Ford's strategic partnership with Volkswagen, marking a milestone from their 2020 collaboration agreement.

Ford Capri EV Coming

As per sources at CarBuzz, Ford is gearing up to unveil its second electric vehicle manufactured at the modernized Cologne facility in Germany on July 10. Reports from Automotive News Europe suggest that this model will boast a coupe silhouette, potentially reigniting the beloved Capri legacy in Europe.

Recent developments at the Cologne plant include the introduction of the Explorer EV, distinct from its US counterpart. The facility underwent extensive retooling to cater to the production of electric vehicles tailored for the European market. The speculated Capri reincarnation is expected to share a platform with the electric Explorer and constitute a significant portion of the plant's production output.

While Ford has yet to officially affirm the Capri moniker for its imminent electric coupe SUV, sources from Automotive News Europe detail it as a "sports crossover." Should this materialize, it would mark the second time Ford transforms a coupe into an SUV, following the 2019 rebirth of the Puma model.

Both the Capri and the electric Explorer are slated to ride on Volkswagen's MEB platform, stemming from the collaborative efforts between the two automotive giants. Originally initiated with the development of the new Ranger and Amarok, the ongoing partnership sparks curiosity regarding potential engagements with VW's forthcoming SSP platform.

As per Electrek, Ford has announced the imminent unveiling of a second electric vehicle, with production slated to commence later this year. This new EV, characterized as a "sports crossover," is a product of Ford's collaboration with VW under a 2020 agreement to utilize its MEB platform, mirroring the foundation of VW's ID lineup.

While Ford initially hinted at introducing an EV following the Mustang Mach-E, which materialized as the electric Explorer, recent revelations indicate plans for a second model.

Although Ford has not officially corroborated this, reports from various media outlets suggest it will bear the moniker Capri. The original Ford Capri saw immense success following its launch in 1969, with sales exceeding 400,000 units within the initial two years. By 1974, the Ford Capri boasted a massive 1.2 million strong driver base.

What's More from Ford Capri

As per EconoTimes referencing Automotive News, Ford is set to unveil the new Capri EV sports crossover on July 10, 2024. Reports indicate that the Capri and Explorer EVs are set to rival VW's ID.4 and ID.5 models. The electric Explorer is designed with a state-of-the-art battery, offering an impressive range of up to 374 miles (600 km).

Volkswagen's GTX lineup utilizes the identical 335 hp powertrain found in the dual-motor Explorer EV, coupled with a robust 79-kWh battery capacity. The single-motor variant is priced at £45,875 ($58,000), while a standard range option is anticipated to debut later at an initial price point of around £39,875 ($50,000).
