SAIC-GM-Wuling, a joint venture of General Motors, has unveiled a sneak peek of the Wuling Starlight S electric SUV, positioning it as a strong competitor against BYD and Tesla in China. Priced attractively at around $9,700, the Starlight S aims to offer affordability while challenging established rivals.

GM Wuling Starlight S Electric SUV's images were uncovered this Monday. This budget-friendly SUV is poised to rival BYD and Tesla in the electric vehicle market competition. Following the introduction of the Starlight electric sedan earlier this year, Wuling's Silver Label portfolio now includes the Starlight S as its second addition.

Electrek pointed out that Wuling expanded its inventory of electric vehicles by introducing the Starlight electric car at the Beijing Auto Show in April. The all-electric model costs more, starting at $13,800 or 99,800 yuan, than the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) type, which was unveiled in December at a starting price of $12,400 or 105,800 yuan.

The report also noted by the end of April, sales figures reflected the purchase of more than 32,000 Wuling Starlight units. The Wuling Starlight EV is noteworthy for having an exceptional range; it has a CLTC range of up to 317 miles (510 km).

Highlighting a distinction, the upcoming Starlight S, despite bearing a similar moniker, deviates in form as a compact SUV variant. Details sourced from China's MIIT reveal specific dimensions, indicating the electric SUV spans 4,745 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,690 mm in height.

Following the recent unveiling of the 2024 Bingo EV by GM's Wuling brand, the latest teaser images have now been released, hinting at further innovations in their electric vehicle lineup.

Sneak Peek, Starlight S Electric SUV: Features, Design, Powertrains

New information has emerged alongside the release of the images concerning the Starlight S Electric SUV. Notably, distinct front designs and chrome trims will distinguish between the EV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants, providing buyers with clear visual cues based on their preferred powertrain option.

According to insights from ArenaEV, the interior of the Starlight S is set to offer amenities like a sunroof, roof rack, front radar, as well as essential safety features such as anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution.

The overall expectation is for the Starlight S to provide a straightforward user experience akin to that of the Dacia Spring, albeit in a larger and more budget-friendly package.

Powering the Starlight S PHEV will be a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine producing 106 hp or 78 kW, paired with the option of two battery configurations: a 20.5 kWh pack delivering 90 km of electric range and a smaller 9.5 kWh battery offering 43 km of emission-free driving capability.

In contrast, the BEV model will house a robust 201 hp or 150 kW electric motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack; however, specific range details for the electric variant have yet to be disclosed.

Anticipated for its imminent release in China, the Wuling Starlight S is poised to provide a cost-effective and pragmatic choice amidst the array of existing electric vehicle options.

Sets to Disrupt Market with Budget Friendly SUV

EV-a2z highlighted the utilization of a lithium iron phosphate battery pack in the Wuling Starlight S, setting it apart as a more budget-friendly option compared to other BEV models available. While the official driving range remains undisclosed by the manufacturer, the blend of technological advancements and cost-effective pricing positions the Starlight S as a formidable player in the rapidly evolving Chinese NEV market.

The upcoming competition between this budget-friendly model and established offerings from companies like BYD and Tesla promises an intriguing dynamic in the electric vehicle landscape upon its market debut.
