Volkswagen is unstoppable. The German automaker brings its latest Golf R to the market. This coincides with Volkswagen's latest partnership with Rivian. Now, the automaker presents this model with higher HP, upgraded style, and a new Black Edition Golf R.
Introducing 2025 Volkswagen Golf R
Volkswagen once again added another offering for its patrons and enthusiasts. The updated Golf R promises new looks, better performance, and an additional color option. This latest model from Volkswagen has 328 HP.
Both the Golf R and Golf R variant underwent significant updates, not only on power but also with their infotainment system. Plus, one could not ignore its new Black Edition. Volkswagen unleashed the Golf R following its teaser months ago.
Jalopnik delved into how Volkswagen gives the Golf R a new touch. The report noted that Volkswagen has introduced a series of updates to the hatchback, with the most significant modifications focusing not just on the refreshed aesthetics.
The highlight of the enhancements lies in the boosted power output. In the latest iteration for 2025, VW has upped the ante by adding an extra 13 hp to the Golf R's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, now delivering an impressive 328 hp. Additionally, torque sees a bump of 15 lb-ft, reaching 310 lb-ft.
This enhanced power is efficiently channeled through the familiar all-wheel drive system equipped with torque vectoring technology and a seven-speed DSG transmission. Among the performance enhancements for the new model year is the inclusion of an upgraded titanium exhaust system sourced from Akrapovič, promising a more resonant exhaust note.
However, this enhancement involves the introduction of artificial engine noise into the cabin, alongside a higher RPM during startup to achieve a distinctive "deep burbling" idle sound.

Golf R New Aesthetics Update
Volkswagen put effort in making the Golf R noticeably different from its predecessors. It never failed to launch an attractive, head-turning version of its lineup. CarScoops provided details regarding this aspect.
CarScoops stated its comparison with the Golf GTI. The premium Golf R showcases a redesigned front fascia featuring sleeker headlights and an illuminated Volkswagen emblem. Complementing this are updated bumpers exuding a subtly more assertive demeanor. Moving towards the rear, matte chrome mirrors, dynamic side skirts, and a choice of 18- or 19-inch wheels enhance the model's sporty profile.
The rear end receives fresh taillights, a gloss black diffuser, and a quad-tailpipe exhaust system. For enthusiasts seeking a more athletic look, Volkswagen offers the option of new 19-inch Warmenau forged alloy wheels, renowned for their lightweight construction at just 17.6 lbs (8 kg) each.
Thus, they are approximately 20% lighter than conventional counterparts and contribute to reduced unsprung weight. Additionally, Volkswagen touts the open design of these wheels as boosting brake cooling efficiency.
More Offerings from Volkswagen Golf R
The Golf R has been significantly upgraded with optional features like the Akrapovič titanium exhaust and advanced IQ. LIGHT LED matrix headlights and redesigned 3D LED taillights with dynamic flashing. The interior showcases a larger 12.9-inch infotainment display, improved technology like the updated digital instrument cluster, enhanced climate controls, and new voice assistant capabilities.
Additionally, the vehicle offers sport seats, carbon fiber accents, blue detailing, stainless steel pedals, and a customizable ambient lighting system for an elevated driving experience and aesthetic appeal.
Black Edition Golf R
Along with the upgrades, Volkswagen announced that it will offer the Golf R with a Black Edition. This elegant and attractive color option is a thrilling news for Golf R lovers. After all, it's nice to have an additional option to choose from.
As per insights from Car and Driver, the Black Edition variant showcases a distinctive aesthetic with blackened badges, brake calipers, exhaust tips, and wheels.
