Rivian recalls some R1S and R1T models. The reason behind the recall is weight capacity mislabeling. The weight capacity for these two models is incorrectly written on their tire placard label.

Rivian Recall: Miswritten Weight Capacity

Rivian issued a recall for some R1S and R1T models. The company took this action after identifying vehicles manufactured for 2022 and 2023 has incorrect information on their tire placard label. There are 666 cars under this latest Rivian recall.

Autoevolution recently highlighted facts about this news. As per official papers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a group of vehicles is being recalled for non-compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

This deviation stems from inaccuracies found on the tire placard label. To address this issue, Rivian, headquartered in California, has pledged to dispatch corrected overlay placards by first-class mail before August 3, 2024.

The revelation of this issue dawned on Rivian's team on June 14 during a thorough examination of the labels against FMVSS 110 guidelines concerning tire selection and rims. Specifically affecting the R1S utility vehicles and R1T pickup trucks, the problematic labels fail to accurately represent the vehicles' maximum weight capacity.

Consequence of Incorrect Weight Capacity Label

This error though not mechanical in nature must not be ignored. Owners of these affected vehicles do not need to visit the nearest car dealership. Still, owners will be notified about this incorrect weight capacity label.

Benzinga discussed possible consequences brought by such error. If this mislabeling will not be corrected chances are problems may occur. In light of the mislabeled information, Rivian has underscored the potential hazards linked to trusting the erroneous label, highlighting the elevated danger of vehicle overloading and the subsequent heightened crash risk.

To address this safety concern, Rivian has decided to dispatch corrected overlay tire placard labels to all affected vehicle owners via mail. Noteworthy changes include transitioning to a lithium-iron-phosphate Standard battery variant and revising the range specifications for models equipped with Large and Max battery options. Additionally, Rivian integrates newly developed, in-house motors tailored for the Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor setups, marking a significant advancement in performance and efficiency for the brand.

Currently, these two electric vehicles are available for lease in the United States. As reported by Electrek, At the beginning of the current year, Rivian broadened its offerings by introducing leasing alternatives for the R1S, expanding the avenues for potential buyers to embrace electric mobility.

In a recent announcement, the electric vehicle manufacturer unveiled its leasing program extension to include the R1T alongside the R1S models, now available for lease in Connecticut, Hawaii, and Rhode Island. With this expansion, Rivian's leasing options now span across 33 states within the United States.
