Subaru Motorsport USA took a big leap in car development. The brand introduced the newest and fastest WRX race car, Project Midnight. Project Midnight is planned to compete in the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Subaru's Fastest Race Car: Project Midnight

Subaru built a new WRX-based vehicle, the Subaru Project Midnight. It will have its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Dubbed the "quickest and fastest" WRX to date, Subaru Project Midnight has a 2.0-liter flat-four that boasts 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque. Subaru's recent statement, as noted by Jalopnik, sheds light on the intentions behind Project Midnight. Subaru emphasizes that Project Midnight aims to push the boundaries further following the triumph of the Airslayer project, focusing on sheer velocity.

Boasting 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque, this powerhouse promises formidable performance. What sets it apart is the remarkable feat achieved with a mere 2.0-liter flat-four engine, complemented by a staggering 9,500-RPM redline, showcasing a blend of power and precision. Furthermore, as per Jalopnik's report, the Project Midnight model showcases a significant weight reduction compared to the Airslayer and even more so when compared to a standard WRX, boasting a difference of approximately 300 pounds and 1,000 pounds, respectively.

This impressive weight saving is partly attributed to the incorporation of a lightweight carbon fiber body that prioritizes aerodynamics. The distinctive wing featured on the vehicle is an enlarged rendition of the one typically seen on the WRX ARA24 rally car designed for gravel terrains.

Accompanied by 18-inch magnesium wheels fitted with 280/650R18 Yokohama ADVAN slick tires, this setup underscores the commitment to performance and agility in the Project Midnight WRX.

CarBuzz also highlighted that while specific performance metrics are not disclosed, Subaru confirms that the engine powering Project Midnight represents a progressive iteration of its renowned rallycross powertrain. The vehicle's aesthetic exudes a menacing aura characterized by a sleek matte black exterior finish, complemented by black-finished wheels and glossy Subaru emblem detailing.

The widened body design incorporates various aerodynamic enhancements, such as a pronounced front splitter, sizable canards directing airflow over the wheel arches, and a substantial rear wing, collectively enhancing the vehicle's stability and grip on the tarmac. Contributing to its elegant demeanor, the use of carbon fiber panels and a reinforced yet lightweight chassis underscores Project Midnight's commitment to agility and performance excellence.

Other Specifications, Details

Aside from its speed, Project Midnight promises more to car buyers. Reported by Road & Track, Project Midnight merges influences from Subaru Motorsports USA's Rallycross vehicles up to 2021, and features borrowed elements from the WRX ARA24 rally car, incorporating a refreshed aesthetic that aligns with the current WRX street model.

A keen observer would discern from the visuals that this iteration is notably more radical in its design approach. Inspired by the American Rally Association Car, the rear wing has been enlarged significantly, amplifying the vehicle's aggressive stance. While Project Midnight retains ample suspension for maneuvering over uneven terrain, the body construction doesn't necessitate the same rugged durability demanded in rallycross competitions, signaling a shift towards a more focused performance orientation.
