BMW has issued a recall due to concerns over faulty starters.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shared that BMW has recalled over 100,000 crossovers and sedans amid worries about fire risks.

BMW indicated in its recall report that "vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were used to determine the specific dates of potentially affected vehicles."

BMW and NHTSA initiated the recall for specific 2019-2020 releases, including the 3 Series Sedan, 7 Series Sedan, 8 Series Convertible, 8 Series Coupe and 8 Series Gran Coupe, as per USA Today.

The company's notice cited issues with the starter motors, which can cause failure to start in affected vehicles and trigger electricity strain and possible fires, thereby damaging vehicle components.

According to Reuters, the NHTSA said, "If the starter motor fails, repeated attempts to start the vehicle can cause the starter motor to overheat due to an electrical overload."

A total of 105,588 units may have this defect, and the exact variants affected include 340XI (2020), 740I (2020-2021), 740XI (2020-2021), 840I (2020), M340I (2020), X5 (2019-2020), X6 (2020), and X7 (2019-2020).

As a preventive measure, dealers plan to implement software updates on the vehicles for free. Update notifications will be sent to owners by September.

In other news, BMW has closed the production on its XM model. The Drive reported in June that the model would now only be available for four years or until 2028 and that a succeeding EV may be launched as a replacement.

The BMW XM was short-lived despite being one of the automaker's fresher installments. The latest update for the unit involved an electric powertrain, which contrasts its previous plug-in hybrid system.

The vehicle features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with an output of 738 horsepower and 738 lb-ft torque for the Label Red variant.
