Toyota and BMW have strengthened their partnership in order to tackle hurdles in hydrogen fuel cell technology.
On Thursday, The Verge learned that the goal of the reinforcement was for a memorandum about the development of zero-emission cars. By 2028, BMW intends to debut its first-ever hydrogen-powered vehicle.
Automotive manufacturers have found it challenging to market fuel cell powered cars to consumers, despite hydrogen being a plentiful resource.
This challenge is further highlighted by the lack of fueling infrastructure in the United States, making hydrogen a less prevalent component than electric batteries.

When it comes to sales, the results are drastically low since only a total of 322 fuel cell vehicles were sold in the United States in 2024's first half. To improve this, Toyota and BMW will standardize certain components, reduce fuel cell vehicle cost and establish a distinct powertrain.
BMW also shared that the production model is a current variant and that it would be hydrogen-powered. For additional context, hydrogen fuel cells only use compressed hydrogen to power a vehicle, as it only emits water vapor.
