Toyota has suffered a massive data breach after a hacker group leaked its customer data.
Fox News reported Sunday that 240GB of data containing Toyota's contact, financial and email information were leaked on a dark web platform. The outlet shared that the hacker group is called ZeroSevenGroup.
Aside from the allegedly stolen information on employees and customers, the group claimed that it had obtained details about network infrastructure and credentials, all obtained using the open-source tool ADRecon.
The threat actor added that apart from hacking a Toyota branch in the United States, the group was obliged to share the stolen data for free.
The time of the data breach is uncertain. However, Bleeping Computer shared that the files were either stolen or created in December 2022.
Toyota responded to the incident, saying that the company was aware of the situation. It also assured customers that the hacking issue was "limited in scope" and was not widespread. The automaker shared that it will focus on helping those who were affected by the leak.
Interestingly, a spokesperson notified Toyota that the systems weren't breached and that a third-party entity that "misrepresented as Toyota" was the one that stole the data. When asked to disclose the party's name, the spokesperson declined.
