The Fiat Electric 500e, a popular model in Europe, will be available in North America for the first time early next year. This is a big step forward for Stellantis, which owns Fiat. This hatchback 500e EV boasts a robust 42-kWh lithium-ion battery system, offering an estimated range of 149 miles (240 kilometers).

Manufactured at the Mirafiori complex in Turin, Italy, these electric cars will soon be exported to North American shores. The suggested selling price for the Fiat Electric 500e in North America stands at $32,500, with an additional $1,595 allocated for delivery costs, as per the official statement from Stellantis. Reuters has the details regarding this development.

While no specific sales targets have been disclosed, the entry of this electric hatchback is expected to create ripples in the market. Stellantis, one of the world's top automakers resulting from the merger of Fiat-Chrysler and Peugeot parent PSA in early 2021.

It boasts an impressive portfolio of brands, including Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Citroen, and Maserati. Moreover, it has been a while since the Fiat 500e was available in the US, with the last release dating back to 2019. According to Engadget's analysis, the Fiat Electric 500e stands out as a petite hatchback 500e EV. Weighing in at just 3,000 pounds, it earns the distinction of being "the lightest passenger BEV in the segment," according to Stellantis. This sets it apart from larger electric SUVs and pickups, some of which can double its weight. However, potential buyers might raise concerns about its compact size in terms of safety.

One contributing factor to its lightweight design is the relatively modest 42 kWh battery pack, allowing for a maximum range of 149 miles. Given its somewhat slow maximum DC charging rate of 85 kW, which provides 80 percent range in approximately 35 minutes, it's primarily suited for urban commuting.

On a positive note, the Fiat 500e's price includes a Level 2 home charger from Fiat's Free2Move subsidiary, a perk for buyers considering this hatchback 500e EV. Under the hood, the Fiat Electric 500e offers a modest 117 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, resulting in a leisurely 0 to 60 MPH acceleration time of 8.5 seconds.

This performance may be considered adequate for city driving, where preserving battery charge becomes a priority. To cater to different driving needs, it provides three distinct modes: Normal, Range, and Sherpa, allowing users to tailor their driving experience accordingly.

The Fiat Electric 500e's interior has undergone a significant upgrade compared to its 2019 predecessor, shedding the plastic-heavy cabin. While Fiat has teased concept interiors with crossover designs in collaboration with renowned brands like Armani, Bulgari, and Kartell, it's uncertain if these designs will reach the US market.

Still, the car has a 10.3-inch touchscreen for entertainment that works with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also has a 7-inch digital gauge display and wireless charging for smartphones. Notably, the low-speed exterior audio alert, mandatory on all EVs, features custom classical music composed by Italian musicians.
