In an unprecedented collaboration with Stanford's Dynamic Design Lab, Toyota Motor Corporation has unveiled the pioneering world's first self-drifting GR Supra, envisioning a paradigm shift in road safety by seamlessly merging the finely honed instincts of professional racing with the cutting-edge capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI).

Toyota G Supra: Self Drifting Tech

Professional racer reflexes and supercomputer prediction are used to study the complex relationship between racing intuition and automated driving technologies. Toyota Racing Development and Stanford University built the self-drifting GR Supra for safety testing.

Optimizing driving skills with advanced control algorithms to achieve auto industry clearance is the goal. Toyota Research Institute (TRI) CEO and principal scientist Gill Pratt emphasizes the project's core goal: using skilled drivers worldwide to improve safety.

Report stated that self-drifting Supras with Pandem riveted widebody kits and 650bhp are technological marvels that could transform road safety. AI technology that analyzes human driving tendencies lets the vehicle perform daring maneuvers and navigate the most difficult roads. Toyota sees AI as a guide, enhancing driver skills rather than replacing them.

Meanwhile, Top Gear provide a review about this Supra autonomous drift technology. According to the review, with assistance from Greddy, a tuner, and the expertise of professional drifter Ken Gushi for specialized maneuvers, Toyota employs machine learning technology in the Supra.

This technology scrutinizes the driving techniques of human drifters, generating algorithms that enable the vehicle to recognize traction limitations and execute drifting maneuvers autonomously.

Top Gear's review further narrated that during external observations, the movements of the world's first self-drifting GR Supra seemed somewhat mechanized, occasionally failing to complete a figure of eight, attributed by the Toyota team to tire temperatures affecting its performance.

However, upon the observers entering the vehicle, the AI technology showcased remarkable precision. Initiating its own acceleration and seamlessly shifting into second gear, the car autonomously identified the optimal starting point for the drift and engaged the hydraulic handbrake.

Throughout the maneuver, it adeptly maintained an impressive angle and executed transitions with a deft combination of clutch and throttle control. Remarkably, it navigated the skid pan without making contact with a single cone, underscoring its exceptional path-tracking abilities and adept comprehension of slipping conditions.

Top Gear's Take

The system understands handling loss but isn't proficient at executing perfect slides on cue, say, when departing casual meetups. TRI's Human Interactive Driving (HID) team aims to integrate these algorithms into vehicle safety systems, prioritizing driver control supplemented by autonomous assistance when necessary. This approach garners support for its emphasis on driver involvement backed by available autonomous technology.

The focus lies on safety: by enabling a car's AI to master drift control, it enhances its capability to manage critical road scenarios. This includes navigating challenging conditions like encountering ice patches or executing sudden swerves to avoid obstacles, aiming to bolster overall safety measures on the road.
