Volkswagen Unveils Upgrades for Golf “Mark 8.5” as It Works on Electric Golf

Volkswagen is currently working on a new electric Golf, and they have recently unveiled an updated version of the Golf 'Mark 8.5.' This serves as the final refresh before the iconic model is eventually replaced by a fully electric version.
Electric Golf is on the Table
TechRadar reported at present, Volkswagen is actively developing a fresh electric iteration of the Golf, and they have recently introduced an upgraded edition for the 'Mark 8.5' Golf. Furthermore, this enhancement to the popular hatchback includes the introduction of a high-performance GTI variant and a powerful Golf R, both of which are scheduled to become available in the UK later this year, with pre-orders commencing in the Spring.
Autoblog cited TopGear's report, VW's head of technical development, Kai Grunitz, the Golf name will remain intact as it is considered the core of the brand. He asserted that the Golf would not face discontinuation.
Nonetheless, the future of the ID.3 remained uncertain, with Grunitz refraining from disclosing specific information but suggesting potential obstacles. He alluded to the challenge of accommodating two or three distinct models for the same customer in the market.
Volkswagen is marking the 50th anniversary of the Golf this year, commemorating the debut of the initial model in March 1974. VW has sold more than 37 million Golfs globally over the span of eight generations.
Grunitz, as confirmed by Top Gear, indicated that the current Golf is powered by gasoline. However, the forthcoming generation will be entirely electric, with a probable launch around 2028. VW ID.3, The all-electric hatchback, originally designed to succeed the e-Golf, might itself be replaced by Volkswagen's upcoming generation of electric Golf models.
Grunitz mentioned that he and his team had initiated work on a fully electric Golf. However, he also stated that there will be an overlap with the ID.3.

2024 Golf Mark 8.5 Upgrade
Auto Express provided a glimpse of the 2024 Golf Mark 8.5 upgrade. As stated in the report, the recently launched Volkswagen Golf faces a challenging task as it enters the market. This updated version, often referred to as the Golf Mk8.5, must contend not only with rivals in the hatchback category but also with competition from family SUVs and electric vehicles.
The Golf Mark 8.5 showcases alterations in its bodywork, including a fresh appearance for the rear bumper. Additionally, it introduces five novel alloy wheel designs and incorporates four additional metallic paint finishes.
Regarding the interior, when it was introduced, it faced considerable scrutiny. Volkswagen representatives informed Auto Express that upcoming models would shift back to utilizing a greater number of physical controls, moving away from touch-sensitive buttons. Fortunately, the Golf Mark 8.5 appears to be making progress in this regard, moving in a more favorable direction.
Auto Express' cited that a source stated that the hardware and software for the Golf's infotainment systems have been entirely overhauled. Additionally, the base version has a central touchscreen measuring 10.4 inches, while higher-end variants will feature an even larger 12.9-inch screen, replacing the 8.25-inch and 10-inch displays from the previous model.
Notably, the new temperature and volume controls situated beneath the central screen have undergone changes. Although they still rely on touch-sliders, they are now backlit, making them usable in low-light conditions.
Additionally, the touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel have been substituted with physical switches. In front of the driver, Volkswagen has incorporated the customizable 'Digital Cockpit Pro' featuring a 10.2-inch screen, and there is also the choice of an "expansive" head-up display.
