General Motors Recalls 300K+ Vehicles Amid Tailgate Malfunction Concern

General Motors is initiating a recall for over 323,000 heavy-duty pickup trucks in the United States due to a potential malfunction in the electronic tailgate release switches. This issue could lead to the gates opening unexpectedly while the vehicles are stationary.
GM Recall: Tailgate Malfunction for Over 300,000 Vehicles
GM is on spotlight as recall of 323,000 heavy pick-up trucks happens. The issue lies on the tailgate. According to a report from Arkansas Democrat Gazette, the affected models include certain Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks manufactured between 2020 and 2024.
Such report mentioned the documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday, water ingress into the switches is the root cause of the problem. This can trigger the tailgates to unlatch while the trucks are parked, posing a safety hazard on the road by potentially spilling unsecured cargo and increasing the risk of accidents.
GM is urging truck owners to ensure that the tailgate is securely closed and latched before operating their vehicles. Additionally, dealers will be replacing an external touchpad switch as part of the recall process. Starting from March 18, affected owners will receive notification letters regarding this issue.
Furthermore, GM dealers have been instructed to halt the sale of affected vehicles until the necessary repairs have been completed. Meanwhile, 9News shared that General Motors has reported receiving 136 complaints regarding the unexpected opening of tailgates on its heavy-duty pickup trucks.

GM's Earnings: Hits Record High
In 2023, the company marketed 76,000 Chevrolet Bolts and other electric vehicles, despite its emphasis on enhancing battery technologies. Despite the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Bolt, only 13,000 vehicles represented the latest battery technology segment, which GM aimed to attract more car buyers to. Motor Times cited the New York Times report on this latest development.
In a recent statement, General Motors reported a roughly 14% increase in its US deliveries in 2023, primarily fueled by the rising demand for electric vehicles, indicating the Detroit-headquartered automaker's expanding footprint in the market. Illustrating this growth, GM achieved total US sales of 2.6 million vehicles in 2023, signifying a significant progression from the previous year's numbers.
Chevrolet experienced a 13% increase in sales, reaching 1.72 million vehicles. This growth was primarily fueled by the popularity and demand for the Trax and Trailblazer sport utility vehicles, contributing to General Motors' varied and prosperous sales lineup.
Meanwhile, Business Insider reported General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is scheduled to announce its fourth-quarter financial results before the market opens on January 30th.
Analysts anticipate that GM's fourth-quarter revenue will be approximately $38.97 billion, as per data from Benzinga Pro. This contrasts with the revenue of $43.11 billion reported in the same quarter of the previous year. Notably, GM has surpassed revenue estimates from analysts for six consecutive quarters.
Regarding earnings per share, analysts expect GM to report $1.16 for the fourth quarter, compared to $2.12 in the corresponding period of the previous year. GM has outperformed analysts' earnings per share estimates for five consecutive quarters.
