Volkswagen Group unveiled the latest member of its ID series of electric vehicles - the ID.7 Tourer. This new model, a variation of the original fastback saloon, offers additional cargo space and enhanced range. Widely recognized as a station wagon in the United States, the estate car stands out as one of the few all-electric choices in the upper mid-size segment across Europe.

Introducing ID.7 Tourer

Expanding its successful range of ID electric vehicles, Volkswagen introduces a more practical version of the ID.7 - the Tourer. Set to hit the market in mid-2024, it will be among the limited selection of electric estate cars available.

According to Electrek, a little over twelve months ago, Volkswagen Group unveiled a disguised prototype of the ID.7, a five-door liftback electric vehicle tailored for executives. Following its official unveiling in April of the preceding year, this electric vehicle emerged as a fully-electric option and, for North America, a substitute for the mid-size Passat sedan.

The initial ID.7 is presently available in North America, Europe, and China (marketed as the ID.7 Vizzion). Production commenced in Germany last summer, and Volkswagen has since revealed intentions to release an estate variant of the ID.7, targeting the European market specifically.

Volkswagen announces that the production will happen alongside its ID.7 sedan counterpart and the ID.4 SUV. Pre-orders are anticipated to commence in Europe in the first quarter of 2024. However, specific details regarding the initial deliveries have not been provided yet.

As per DPA International, featuring a 605-liter boot, the Tourer offers a notable increase of 73 liters in capacity compared to the standard ID.7. Moreover, with the rear seats folded down, the luggage space expands to 1,714 liters, surpassing the 1,586 liters provided by the regular model.

The ID.7 Tourer will offer a choice of two battery options. One is a new 86 kWh battery, promising an estimated range of 687 km. However, a smaller 77 kWh version will remain an alternative choice.

Moreover, the larger battery option will come with a rapid charging capability of 200 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes. Opting for the smaller battery reduces the charging capacity slightly to 175 kW, yet it still ensures a 10% to 80% charge within 28 minutes.

Closer Look Inside

The interior of the Tourer closely resembles that of the regular ID.7. It features a sizable central touchscreen equipped with Volkswagen's latest software. Notably, for the first time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) service ChatGPT has been incorporated, enabling drivers to adjust various aspects of the vehicle solely through voice commands.

As a standard feature, a panoramic sunroof will be available, which can seamlessly transition from opaque to transparent using smart glass technology. Additionally, all models come equipped with LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, and roof rails. Furthermore, every version includes an augmented reality head-up display as part of the standard equipment.
Various accessories will be offered for the ID.7, including a "luggage compartment plug-in module" that enables owners to attach a bicycle carrier, which can be unfolded using a foot switch. Additionally, a roof box can be installed to increase the Tourer's storage capacity by 460 liters if needed.
