Mazda's renowned SP concept, inspired by the third-generation RX-7, has captured the interest of fans and automobile lovers worldwide. Chief Designer Masashi Nakayama has expressed the automaker's intent to transition the striking Iconic SP concept into a production model. Unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, the concept draws unmistakable parallels to the late-model Series 8 Spirit R variant of the RX-7, evoking memories of the beloved sports car.
RX-7 Possible Rebirth Soon
Nakayama sees the design as an homage to the RX-7. It aims to evoke nostalgia while also incorporating up-to-date elements. As a result, it might become a valuable addition to Mazda's portfolio.
Following the excitement generated by the reveal of Mazda's new concept car last October, anticipation grows as chief designer Masashi Nakayama expresses his aspiration for a production iteration of the iconic SP concept.
As per CarScoops, drawing inspiration from the famous RX-7, the concept's striking design honors the sports car's past while expressing a modern look. If the Iconic SP goes into production, it will be able to use the MX-30's unique hybrid rotary technology, resulting in a spectacular vehicle that will attract global attention.
CarScoops cited Top Gear's interview with Nakayama. Nakayama expressed his desire to propel the Iconic SP into their next automotive endeavor, emphasizing his eagerness to witness its presence on the global stage. He emphasized that the deliberate resemblance to the design of the third-generation RX-7 was a significant deliberate choice, citing it as a paramount wellspring of inspiration for his team.
Furthermore, he highlighted how the distinctive powertrain served as a guiding force in shaping the design of the Iconic SP, aligning with the innovative spirit synonymous with their approach.
He also remarked that the marketing campaign for the RX-7 emphasized its association with the rotary engine, a pivotal feature enabling its creation.

Consequently, our design approach incorporates numerous elements reminiscent of the RX-7, aligning with this core aspect.
As reported in CarBuzz, the Iconic SP concept draws inspiration from the original RX-7 by incorporating a unique approach to the rotary engine. In this rendition, the rotary serves as a generator, supplying power to a robust 365-horsepower electric motor arrangement located on the rear axle, effectively transforming the vehicle into an EV without the need for a cumbersome battery.
This configuration results in a svelte weight of under 3,200 lbs and an ideal 50:50 weight distribution, enhancing its agility and performance. Mazda's newly established RE Development Group takes on the responsibility of ushering in the advancement of this innovative powertrain.
The group is dedicated to reinvigorating the rotary engine for a future where it can operate on a range of eco-friendly fuel sources, ensuring the perpetuation of the pure driving experience associated with internal combustion.
In an optimistic scenario, a production-ready iteration of the Iconic SP would feature an electrically assisted rotary engine directly propelling the wheels, affording buyers the timeless exhilaration they desire while embracing the efficiency standards characteristic of modern vehicles.
